Matrix is a refreshing spot in a neighborhood that is usually completely filled with obnoxious frat boys and superficial party girls. The crowd here seems to always be a diverse mix of locals whom you can actually have an intellectual conversation with. The music is great and the ambiance is swank, not to mention they've got an awesome staff! |

It seems as if am going against the flow in my review of MatrixFillmore, but what can I say - after 4 years, I still like it.
Matrix gets lots of bad rap for being a pretentious meat market, or a Marina girl/Frat boy hangout. It is not actually entirely accurate. Typical Marina girls and boyz seem to frequence nearby lower key bars lately, and Matrix is usually full of interesting people of foreign decsent.
I will agree with those who complain about the lack of good looks among the clientele of a place that has a reputation of a swanky lounge. The general looks grade has indeed gone down the drain, both with women and men. You do get your share of cougars who really belong to the nearby Balboa Cafe; you have groups of average-looking girls with DUFFs (in case you don't know: Designated Ugly Fat Friends), you get dorky guys drooling over an occasional good looking woman... but - this is not just the Matrix problem. This is a trend in San Francisco in general, where door policies are liberal and girls who would stay home if this was LA, New York or Vegas, feel free to go out to places like Matrix.
As for the lounge itself, it has few rivals in the City with regards to organization, decor, and the general feel. I am not sure whether it is because it's owned by Mayor Newsom (or is it still?), but the staff is polite and efficient, from the bouncer to bartenders. There's always a creative giant bouquet of flowers at the bar's end. You don't have to wait forever for your drinks like in so many other bars - well-trained uniformed gorgeous-looking bartenders are there to , well, tend to you.
Little tables around the floor are in the shapes of letters S, E and X. The backroom is great for more intimate conversations. Unfortunately, they did away with curtained booths - so no more clandestine boob flashes :( But the fireplace is still there, the DJ is usually good, and - most importantly - their last call is quite late, not like the other paranoid bars in the Cit |

Well.. to start out, the Marina is weird, You dont even know who is really over 21 anymore, you see people there that dont take nightlife too serious, there are in tennis shoes and all, but, Matrix is one of the spots where I like to go because there is a nice crowd like 80% of the time, the fireplace is nice, the glass windows in the front give it a nice look from outside. When ever there is nothing going on Sundays, Matrix is a good choice, Sebastien events are always good. Although, Matrix should start making some events with good DJ's. They lack on that pretty bad. Music there SUCKS |

Usually you'll find Matrix packed by the typical, yuppie, Marina crowd, but it's still a cool spot to hang out at if you just want to chat amongst friends and people-watch. If you get there early enough to claim a seat that has a waitress coming around to take orders, hold onto it all night, because it definitely beats waiting next to the crowded bar for 10 minutes to get a drink. |

Cool place and mostly college crowd. When you go there, check out the back bar, the bartender (Matt) makes strong drinks. |

The bartenders are nice, the music is awesome, and a good looking friscan crowd roams. Oh and the bathroom is just lovely. Lovely I tell you. |

Last Thursday I took a group of friends from the UK to Matrix. I love the reaction is always ohhh and ahhhh. Chill, nice flatscreens, good decor, great drinks and awesome bartenders! I love the Matrix. The crowd is real mixed, but generally everyone is dressed to impress. Its a great place to take people new to the city or just in town for the weekend. The back area is awesome if you can get a spot!! |

It's has been a while (3 years) since I visited Matrix. I decided to make a stop there after having dinner down the street at Bobo's (Sunday). It was a Sebastien Entertainment event and it was 'good times'. Matrix does a good job at creating the Lounge environment. Plenty of seating, video screens, swanky interior, and a cozy fireplace. I felt very at home with my glass of pinot. My only complaint about the evening is that I would have liked to hear some loungey down tempo house instead of hip hop. I love hip hop but it didn't seem to go as well with the overall atmosphere of the establishment. Just a preference thing ... |

I stumbled across Matrix one night after a long day at a Tattoo Expo in SF. A group of us recently "PIERCED" patrons decided if would be a great end to a LONG and TIRING day. (Plus one of us needed something potent to NUMB the pain!!)So we started out at a local pub down the street and decided we needed a nicer more elegant place to have cocktails. I will admit though, coming from a tatoo expo, I was a little underdressed for what Matrix has to offer. We arrived there and the place was somewhat empty. I'd say about 4 groups of pretty diverse people. We ordered everything on their appetizer menu, and to my amazement, the food arrived almost immediately and it was GREAT!!!!! No complaints. The hostess was also very pleasant recommending drinks here and there and she was very perceptive to our empty glasses. I think I must have tried at least 4-5 different martinis....(don't worry, I didn't drink them all(...and they were all pretty pleasant. Amongst our entire group, we spent a good amount of time and money at the Matrix. As the evening pressed on, a more sophisticated well dressed crowd started to fill the place and it got pretty PACKED! The music got everyone going. Would I come back to Matrix? ABSOLUTELY...for both the food, drinks, and the atmosphere. |
