I first went to this spot over a year ago for a fundraising event that a friend threw. I thought it was cleaver, different, and a unique concept. Where else can you go to grab a drink, get a quick shave, and lounge around with some friends after a long day.
Being that I am a woman, it's kind of nice to see a place cater more towards the men! I hope to come back when it isn't so much an "event" and just relax with some friends. |

Loving the hot and cold reviews for this place. Always get a kick out of the extreme polarized hatred that SF folks seem to feel. Whatever you guys do, DO NOT chill out. I need the entertainment.
Stopped by here a year ago for an event and thought the place was interesting. If only because it is literally half a block from my office, I can definitely see stopping in here for a beer.
Got a free trim and a shoeshine and left thinking I would sign up for the basic membership for $65. Only thing holding me back is the fact that I probably get a haircut once every 3 or 4 months and it costs $12. Now I'm no high-rolling finance hot-shot, but that seems steep. But ... I am also irresponsible with money.
So i was left with a tough decision. On the one hand I could pony-up, get a haircut every month and (attempt) to look like a professional. On the other hand I might risk a decline in lovely comments such as the following:
(true quotes from the last 6 months, only a sample)
1. "Where are you from and does everyone there have mullets?"
2. "Brad, you don't look like a lawyer, you look like a clown."
3. "Starting at point guard out of Colgate University, at 5'9", 6' with fro..."
4. "I really would, but I seem to have lost my number. Maybe its in your hair somewhere."
5. "You are hot, can I shave your head?"
*** UPDATE 5/28/08 ***
Was given a membership here for my bday and have now had two months to test the results in the field. I think the haircuts here are good, the service and friendliness even better. Love the shoeshine as well. Pricey, but you get a lot of "bangs" for your buck. :)
Unfortunately I have not noticed any decline in comments such as the ones above. My most recent fave:
"Cool hat! What animal is it made from?" |

Not the first place you'd think a couple of Misses would hang out after work, but considering we spent our twenties kissing at least as many girls as the average college guy, we felt pretty qualified to rub elbows with the boys at MR. The Friday after work crowd was all sophistication--one guy working on his laptop and enjoying a beer, another couple of suit guys watching the golf game on the big but sublte TVs, and another group sharing a bottle of champagne on the low, minimalist black couches. The 40% guy in me was already very impressed.
My favorite part was that the white shoe-shine guy was polishing a brown guy's shoes (anyone who read Black Like Me will also appreciate this justice) and doing it in time to the house music beats playing in the background! The gracious owners, Sean and Yumi, really nailed this place--tasteful, comfortable classiness (no corsets here) for when you are not in the mood for yelling over the din at the Royal Exchange.
The spare but well-chosen wine list is a bit overpriced ($15 for a Malbec that should go for about $9) and they only have a license for beer and wine (and soju cocktails), but the service is good and I suppose it won't kill me to miss a martini every now and then.
Lest you get a fat head, MR., allow me to sing you a little James Brown, "This is a maaaan's world, yes it's a man's world, But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl"! |

I had the pleasure of meeting the owner of this fine establishment, & was offered the round of services essential for any "well maintained" gentleman.
I rock the bald head & the tight Go-Tee, so their straight blade skills was a true test. Can you say FANTASTIC? I sat there with a glass of Chimay in the back room while an expert stylist took the time & paid attention to detail that only comes form a mens salon of such caliber.
Parking is difficult, so I recommend grabbing an apt right around 6pm.
Worth the experience!

Mr. is a really sweet little classy venue. It has a very personal, comfortable feel, like you're having cocktails with friends at home. I really liked that they extended the stainless steel hardware motif of the traditional working barbershop throughout with barstools reminiscent in design of barbershop stools, and so on. My general take was thatMr. felt like a little slice of New York City around the 1920s, with the attention to detail of quality and design of that era. |

Went to Mr. on Friday for Michael's going away party and I have to say, very cool. It was warm but stylish, and the space seemed well thought out. Good sized bar and plenty of room to move around. I thought it was the perfect venue for something intimate and private, but we will have to go back on a regular night to see how it holds up as a lounge and at capacity. |

I used to get my haircuts at Spargo, which also bills itself as a men's salon, but they have nothing on MR. Downstairs MR. is an excellent bar and the bartenders are quick to get you a beer and make you feel welcome, and so far the crowd there has been top notch. But I came for a haircut, and Nick gave me an damn near perfect cut, like I haven't had since I lived in NYC. Highly recommended. |

Mr. is ultra chic, and extra classy. The crowd is sophisticated and good looking. The bar is a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. Considering it's a barbershop, it's something different, I'll definitely be back. |

I love MR! The crowd is great.. good looking professionals socializing over a great glass of wine. If I were a man I would definitely have a membership here. The haircuts are fantastic- the men always look sharp when they leave- and the barbers who take care of them are really cool. Also, the rest of the staff is great too. The hostesses are all fantastic and sweet and the owners just really did a great job on the whole place from design to concept... I recommend this place to everyone. |

It is very easy to forget that this place is a barbershop. I think that's what makes it so interesting. MR exudes 'cool'. It is the perfect place for an intimate gathering. Once again, aesthetics have won me over. However, beyond aesthetics, there is some real substance to MR. The seating area is comfortable and relatively spacious, the owners (Sean and Kumi) are wonderful hosts, and the set up is very chic and unique. The stools surrounding the bar are 'barbershop style' (of course) and the upstairs area (where there was someone actually getting a hair cut when I first walked in) makes the perfect observation area for those who are inclined to 'people watch'. 5 out of 5. |

We were at Mr. for the eVelvetRope event. I think that Mr. is a really cool and hipster kinda place with a touch of New York and London yet still old San Francisco! I felt instantly at ease there. The drinks were fabulous and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Everything was very clean and orderly. Very simple designs, less is more i would say. They had the Godfather movie playing on the big screen and very nice lounge music in the background. The owners of Mr. were very gracious and kind. I could imagine Mr. drawing a very nice happy hour crowd or it would be great for intimate private events. This is a great place to meet beautiful inside and out professional people. Whats funny is that i know it is a barbershop but i never really felt like i was in a barbershop...very cool. If i was a guy i would want to be a member at Mr. |

Mr is an ultra plush lounge in the heart of San Francisco. It is a place for gentlemen and ladies to go and unwind...get drinks...watch the game...AND get your haircut if you need it! The bartenders are lovely....the owners are smart and genuine people. THe lay out is very logical with tvs in every angle. High end wine selection and all around warm and fun atmosphere! I will be there all the time! While the club is designed for men...but women are always welcomed..which makes for good looking crowds of successful people...YES PLEASE! |
