So I had the pleasure of dining at Michael Mina's a couple weeks ago. A dear friend (Palmer) was in town and treated a good friend of mine and myself to dinner (his choice!)...Michael Mina is one of Palmer's favorites and I can see why. We decided to sit at the bar to keep it informal and fun! Michael Judge, Michael Mina's right hand man (who has been with him since day 1) recognized Palmer and greeted us warmly meanwhile providing us with excellent service and selected fantastic wine selections for us, he introduced us to SAUZET PULIGNY MONTRACHET, BURGUNDY 2006 that was absolutely scrumptious! It had Sancerre qualities and was light with a nice toasty finish. Palmer only drinks 21 yr old scotch and they didn't have it so he happily settled for the 18yr Macallan.
Now on to dinner....HOLY COW, everything was wonderful. I insisted we try the lobster corn dogs (they are served as an amuse upon request, I didn't see them on the menu) because I have heard from so many people say how dreamy they were.... they held up to the hype, they ROCK. Each of us received a plate with four mini corndogs all garnished with a different mustard...I wish I could buy these so I could eat them at home they are so good. For an appetizer I chose the Ahi Tuna Tartare complete with scotch Bonnet pepper, bosc pear & sesame oil with a quail egg. The dish was served with all the components separate and then the waiter mixes it up in front of you and shapes it in a perfect triangle, unbelievable!....and the portion size was very generous. Aimee selected the bacon wrapped Scallops and enjoyed them immensely. She especially enjoyed the Manhattan Tomato Concasse that was delicately paired with along side leeks and potatoes. Palmer had the Crustacean Trio which included a shrimp cocktail, Maine lobster roll, & a crab "Po Boy." It was beautiful as well as tasty...For dinner we all ordered the same thing, lame I know but we all wanted the same thing and none of us wanted to share (the food was to good!) So all three of us ordered the trio of beef: Filet tail, sweet carrots, Bearnaise reduction, Short Rib, La Ratte potatoes, natural Jus, & Dry aged Rib-eye, Morel Mushrooms, Sauce Bordelaise. After we all licked our plates clean we had a discussion about which was everyone's favorite.... We all agreed on the short ribs, and I didn't even think I liked short ribs that much! They were wonderful and the other hit was the mash potatoes that are served with the short rib, they were so fluffy, light and creamy. Yum. For dessert we had more wine and the little chocolate melt in your mouth lollypops they drop off with the bill (I now regret not ordering dessert...heheheheehe)
To sum it up, I have dined many places in our beautiful city and this is my favorite restaurant.
Thank you Michael Judge for treating us like royalty and I will be back soon for the Lobster Pot Pie!!!!

You cant please everybody. But you can sure as hell try.
Michael Mina specializes in a tasting menu featuring three courses each focused on a main ingredient that is prepared in three ways.
Brad is a sucker for three-ways.
Warning: I have never paid for this kind of experience before but this is a 'professional' establishment - and I am told you usually have to pay double for this kind of action.

A place that I'd love to return to, but I don't feel like anyone i would want to take would truly appreciate this place. I know that the saying goes "you can't eat the decor" but Barbra Berry Did the interior work on this restaurant and it is simply stunning. Of course the food is unbelievable, you get what you pay for. And the wine list made me wish that I drank wine (although I DID get my companions to sample some very exclusive Anjeo Tequila, Haha). This is place that made me love Scallops AND beets... Strange I know but it was THAT great. Service is excellent as well. The only down side is the noise level for being fine dining, but the high ceilings are worth it. |

Michael Mina is one of the best restaurants in the city, but you should be prepared to have an incredibly long dinner experience. The food is well prepared, the sashimi and the beef zabaton are richly flavored, but I prefer Mina at the Bellagio to SF as it has one of my all time favorites, lobster pot pie. My only complaint about Mina may be the weird ambiance as it is directly in the lobby of the Westin Hotel |
