Solid Restaurant all around. Rugged yet stylish decor with excellent food. Comfortable spacing between tables making it a nice place to go and not have to shout to sustain a conversation. I would recommend for a top notch business lunch or quiet classy dinner. |

This is my favorite restaurant hands down in San Francisco.
1) b/c im greek
2) b/c I love greek food
3) b/c I love a fantastic dining experience
4) b/c excellent service, atmosphere and lamb paidakia are my idea of heaven
This is my #1 choice of where to take clients as well. If this is your first time there and you know "tipota" (greek for nothing) about Greek food, here is the best thing to order and you will impress your date, family, or even the biggest Greek food critic.
Apps:
-- Olives, lots of yummy olives, from small and green to big purple Kalamata olives
-- Grilled Octopus
-- Fried Smelts with LOTS of lemon
-- Pita Bread with Tzasiki Sauce - creamy cucumber and garlic spread
-- Spanakopita - spinach pie, filo stuffed with spinach and feta
Wine:
Safe bet on the reds is Nemea, it's a lighter wine with a lot of flavor
Salad:
Horiatiki - essentially this is a "village salad." It doesn't have lettuce, only cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, peppers, and feta cheese. dip your bread and pita in the dressing, it's perfectly acceptable, if not expected.
Dinner:
Lamb Paidakia - or lamb chops, i have to say that at Kokkari, don't order the lamb off the spit. Its not as good. the paidakia are delicious, and are served with the most delicious potatoes.
Whole Cooked Sea Bass - flown in from Greece, and the BEST bet for anyone who doesn't eat red meat.
Desert:
Galaktoboureko - just ordered it, sweet honey drenched filo with custard. oh my...
And of course - a Greek coffee, heated old world style in a heated urn filled with sand and do NOT eats the grinds at the bottom |

Where to begin? This is probably one of my all time favorite restaurants. I must start with the decor; so cozy and comfortable, but chic- I feel like I'm in Greece again. The service, as many have mentioned, truly is the best I've had at a restaurant; always attentive, very friendly and accomodating. Listen to their recommendations- they aren't pushy, and you never end up ordering too much. My favorite plates include the smelts (a must!), lamb riblets (they literally melt in your mouth), the duck and the grilled octopus. The appetizer dips are also amazing and EVERY dessert on their menu is exquisite. A unique and traditional treat on the menu is their Watermelon with Feta appetizer... its about as close to dessert on a beach in Greece as one can get! :0)
If you can reserve the Hania private room downstairs, its quite an experience.

This is by far the best Greek restaurant I have been to. Being Greek myself, I never can find good authentic, traditional dishes but this place has it. I recommend the Hania room, we went for my company party and everything was excellent, cozy atmosphere, good wine list. |

I am Greek, and this is the best Greek food I have ever had outside of my family's kitchen. I had the branzino, a European Sea Bass, and it was amazing. Greeks are not usually big on presentation, but with flavors like these, presentation does not matter. The atmoshere is great; it almost feels like being inside a huge, wooden ship. I love it! |

I very rarely hand out 5s, but this is it. So it's the night before Big Game and I got a group of us Cal and Stanfurd people out for dinner as a temporary truce of sorts. We get to Kokkari and the party who has our table won't leave. Yes we had to wait 45 minutes but it was well worth it. To make up for it they put us downstairs in a private room that was amazingly charming and our server Jason was incredibly attentive and fun.
Peter (my wine guy) ordered a wonderful bottle of champagne and a bottle of red, and proceeded to order 8 dishes off the menu, each was amazing in their own way. We started off with the grilled octopus (surprisingly tasty) and the bread with 3 dips of sorts, the roe being amazingly delicious (most of us didn't realize it was roe), and the pan fried cheese (Jenn's choice) which was actually good. Half of us has the egg-lemon soup- a must- and split a couple of greek salads- so fresh. We split the entrees of lamb shank, duck, and mousaka (a casserole of sorts). Everyone was happy and pleasantly full- not stuffed (which I consider a must in a 5 rated dining situation).
The we ordered the semolina custard in filo with apricot and pistachio ice cream for dessert, but because we had been discussing the flourless chocolate cake Jason brought it out on the house. Perfection. And the end of the night, dinner was about $50 a person plus tip and well worth every penny. I'm telling everyone :-) simply spectacular dining experience. |

Rule number one: It's called a breakup because it's broken.
Rule number two: Don't go to dinner with the broken! lol
Mediterranean food is some of the best eating you'll ever do & Kokkari does the Greeks proud. Located on Jackson street, it's the perfect place to feed those Pita Bread and Lamb cravings.
Tried the Pita Bread, Swelts and braised lamb for dinner ...all fantastic. Excellent lamb though I think it could do with a little more consideration for spices...I like spicy food and while the Lamb was tender it didn't particularly stand out from any other lamb I've had beyond that.
If you do try the desert, try the Figs ...it doesn't get any better than that. Service is impeccable with particularly attentive staff. |

My BF said he was taking me to Kokkari for dinner, and i said 'sushi?'
No, Greek.
Really? Upscale Greek? Excellent.
Absolutely loved it, the food was amazing, service was OK. . . we had a bad table, right next to the opentable stand, and so our server literally would take our order and spin around and put it in. Yet for some reason, he'd always interrupt during the most important parts of our conversations . . . when he was hanging out only inches away from us the entire time.
The bartender was wonderful, attentive and knowledgeable.
The restaurant is HUGE. I mean it just keeps going. Seems like a great place for a party.
And the food. . . amazing. Looking forward to going back.

I love them both! Kokkari and Evvia- weather you are in the comfort of your San Francisco home, or if you find your self in Palo Alto, try these appetizing restaurants!
Kokkari in comparison to Evvia is a bit stuffier- in terms of the crowd, and less Mediterranean- in terms of the décor. BUT! The food is fantastic just the same! Every single appetizer on that menu is scrumptious. You have to try the lamb chops- succulent!
As an avid fan of Greece and the Mediterranean, I really enjoyed the traditional setting in Evvia. The service was great; the waiter was able to pronounce everything with a remarkable accent. The food was mouth-watering… Souvlaki Souvlaki Souvlaki! … reminded me of a rustic restaurant in Mykonos.
