New York, London, and L.A. all have members-only lounges for the chic set, but the idea's always been a harder sell for smaller towns like San Francisco. That hasn't stopped Damon White, 39, and Joseph Latimore, 40, veterans of NYC and L.A. restaurants, from charging ahead with Otis. The tiny (1,300 square feet), tony lounge is the place to be where professionals, glitzy socialites, and freaky artists commingle. To ensure exclusivity, several events a week are open only to members, who have received secret decoder rings the old-fashioned way: by invite only. Outfitted by architect Nicoló Bini and furniture and interior designer Disfigure, Otis features 20-foot ceilings; a dramatic sky-high mirrored bar; and 70s glam fixtures of bone leather, wood, and chrome. With connections to Vibe, Spin, and Jade Records as well as society investors, White is confident Otis can prove that San Franciscans don't mind a little social segregation now and then. "If we can't do it, it can't be done." |
